Talking Welcome to Addiction Survivors - How to use this forum best

Welcome to Addiction Survivors an anonymous positive support community of people using modern evidence-based practices in their total addiction treatment plan. Education and understanding are highly valued here.

Private information:

Protect your anonymity. If you identify yourself it may influence what you share and prevent you from being honest and forthcoming on the forum, reducing the benefit you receive. This is an anonymous forum and you are not obligated to identify yourself in any way to anyone, including the admins. Please do not post your full name, email address, social media links, website links or any other personal identifying information.

Online peer support can be a valuable tool in helping you achieve sustained addiction remission, but as with any tool, it needs to be used correctly to be effective.

This forum should be a positive influence on your recovery. To ensure that, you have to learn what to take and what to discard. You should feel better after a visit to the forum not worse. However, it is up to you to control that experience. Dwelling on negative posts can be upsetting, so you need to learn how to focus on what is helpful to you and ignore what isn’t.

Online peer support is unique because you can regulate how much support, what kind of support and who you receive support from. This allows you to control your support and optimize it. Pick how much and from/to who you get/give support.

You will learn that reading some post are more useful to you than some others. If you find any members are detrimental to your recovery or you are continually upset by their posts, you can place them on your “ignore” list and their post will be hidden from your view.

Sometimes it is good to read other opinions or facts even if you disagree or even know it to be wrong. Respect others’ opinions and politely help correct their facts (if you want to) with links to credible references. Avoid defensive or confrontational members, you never know what problems or issues someone might have so its best to ignore outright rudeness and always assume people mean well, sometimes tone is lost in the written word, so assume advice is given in good spirits. We have icons to help communicate tone, and

Criticizing or complaining about how someone else posts or gives advice is non-productive. Instead please post by example. When new members come to the board they measure what is and what isn't acceptable from what they read of other posters. If rude and disrespectful posts are common they may be more likely to respond that way. On the other hand if most posts are respectful, considerate and non-stigmatizing, this will set the tone. So the best way to ensure a civil and useful online support community is to post in the manner you want others to post to you.

When we have the inevitable inappropriate posters come here, the best thing we can do is to ignore them when possible and not get lured into the drama, or tricked into violating the policies. Some have posted here with the sole intent of disrupting the support people are seeking. Sometimes they can't be ignored, and in those cases abiding by the policies will arm the admin with the ability to ban these people quickly and fairly, so the people looking to better their lives will be able to.

There are some wonderful people here that are willing to answer questions and offer support. For years, they have been very generous with their time, and willing to help others suffering with addiction. Some came here asking for help and now have stayed to offer help to others.

We hope you find the community helpful and enjoyable and remember Information obtained online should only help you in asking your doctor the right questions. Any information you read here should serve to inspire you to investigate further with credible, verifiable referenced sources like your doctor, peer reviewed studies, and scrutinized government sources. NEVER TAKE ANY ONLINE ADVICE OVER THAT OF A QUALIFIED HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL.

Welcome!

The idea is you can have a place to post your chronological experience and have it all consolidated into one place to look back on.

Keeping a journal online is not only therapeutic to the author but very helpful to other readers who are about to experience some of the same things.

Post Time zones - Browser type - Ignore feature

Time zones:
To change time zones or the way the forum is displayed you can click on the USER CP (control panel) at the top of this page. It will allow you to make some customizations.

Browser:
We also recommend you use FireFox as your browser. It has a built in spell checker for forms and is faster, less susceptible to virus intrusion, and in our opinion easier to use than Internet explorer. Here is the link to download it
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox...FQNHFQodoRZOEQ

Google Chrome is another browser that works well with this forum-very fast.
http://www.google.com/chrome?hl=en&brand=CHMI

Ignore feature:
If you need to place a disruptive or disrespectful member on your ignore list here’s how:
1. Click on “User CP” at the top of the page
2.Then find “Edit Ignore list
3.There you enter the name of the member you want to ignore and click OK
You will still see that they posted and can view the post if you wish, but the body of the post will not be visible otherwise.

Exclamation Internet addiction

People with addictions are in danger of transferring that compulsion to other things like the internet. Uncontrollable compulsion to post can be damaging as you can neglect important things in your life in favor of the internet. Although it may be a healthier addiction when compared to chemicals it still can ruin relationships, and interfere with quality of life. It also perpetuates the compulsive attributes that are the target of change in any addiction treatment. If you find you are becoming obsessed with posting or spending so much time online other parts of your life are being neglected, it might be an indication that you should cut back. If you are unable to cut back, you may need to discuss this with your counselor.

Here is a link to a test you can take to see if you are in danger of switching addictions:

Question To Any Banned Members - Private information - Technical issues

To Any Banned Members

For various reasons some of you have been prohibited from posting on the forum for the greater good of the other participants and readers. Please do not let this deter you from getting the help you need and deserve. There is still much to be gained by just reading the support given to others or reading the educational site www.naabt.org/education.cfm . The decision to seek treatment for addiction is a lifesaving one. There are many resources available, here are a few to start. http://naabt.org/local/

Online support forums are not right for everyone and are limited in how much support they can offer. Although this forum may not have been a good match for you, don’t give up. If you think you can get some benefit from online support, there are many others on the internet, some with no policies to adhere to at all. Finding one that you are comfortable in is essential in utilizing this kind of support.

Live support groups offer even more help. Since we are all more familiar with live interactions than we are with internet interactions, it is easier to know what is appropriate behavior when seeking support from others.

Peer support is not therapy however, it is limited in how much it can help. A counselor or therapist can help you determine what the right combination of support and therapy would be for your individual circumstances.

No one treatment, therapy or support is right for everyone, finding one that is right for you will be worth the effort. We wish you the very best at achieving and maintaining addiction remission.

Forum policies: http://www.addictionsurvivors.org/policies.cfm

Here are some other buprenorphine boards.

drugabusehelp.com
readybb.com

NEVER TAKE ANY ONLINE ADVICE OVER THAT OF A QUALIFIED HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL.

Private information:

Protect your anonymity. If you identify yourself it may influence what you share and prevent you from being honest and forthcoming on the forum, reducing the benefit you receive. This is an anonymous forum and you are not obligated to identify yourself in any way to anyone, including the admins. Please do not post your email address or any other personal identifying information.

Technical issues:

A few posters have experienced technical difficulties. Anti-SPAM software is installed on this forum. The anti-spam software looks at, length of posts, frequency of posts, duplicate identities, and evaluates content of posts by counting relevant key words and phrases and applying proprietary calculations. Multiple, lengthy posts that don’t appear to be about the subject matter may be seen as SPAM by the application. When a certain amount of posts are deemed SPAM the program takes action. 1) Temporarily locks out the poster 2) Permanently bans the poster 3) Deletes the post 4) Resets the post counter 5) or a combination of the others. Precisely how many posts, how long the post, how relevant the post and the other criteria are not divulged by the software makers. The program has eliminated virtually all SPAM from the forum ranging from online pharmacy ads to gambling sites and political dissertations. To date only 3 members (that we know of) have been mistakenly affected by this software. If you suspect any of your posts are detected as SPAM please consider the criteria above and adjust your posting style.

Lightbulb Change the order posts are displayed

You can choose to have posts displayed from newest to oldest or oldest to newest (the latter is how most forums are set up)

To change your display preferences go to "User CP" in the purple line at the top of the page under the Addiction Survivors logo, then select "edit option" under "thread display options" you can choose how you would like posts displayed.

Lightbulb Signatures feature

We've added a "signatures" feature. This allows you to automatically attach a line at the end of every post you make. It can be useful if you have created a journal in the "My Thread" section that explains your history and progress. This way when you ask a question or make a comment people can easily check your link and see things like how long you have been in treatment, etc. To add a signature, click the User CP link at the top of the page then click "edit signature" to create a signature, then "edit options" to turn the feature on.

Lightbulb Subscribe feature- get an email when someone responds to your thread

The subscribe feature prevents you from checking back to see if anyone responded to a question or thread you are interested in. When you subscribe to a thread (any thread, yours or someone else's) you get an email each time someone posts to it. This is especially useful if you need an answer right away or post in a thread that doesn't get much action.

To subscribe to a thread: click Thread Tools at the top of each thread and select "subscribe to this thread" you can unsubscribe the same way.

I'm hoping to gain knowledge and the feeling of being understood. People who don't understand addiction are so judgemental due to there ignorance! People who are or was and addict understand fully and I love them for being just there.

never did anything like these forums before but wanted to say yes I finally did it. my first appointment now on suboxion and think I might be ok. I was using 20 to25 norco 10mg a day and got out of hand in everyway possible and trying this as a last result at a life again. What ever you know I would be gratefull for the information as I'm really new at this thing. ***One Love** ShelleyG

Just wanted to thank you for posting these links. My friend reffered me to this site & we both are uninsured, so we went to the provided links & signed up for the free discount scrip card, & it saves about 20% on my Subutex, so thank you! I also wanted to add that the other link you provided gives you free Suboxone if you made under $26,000 last year, I beleive. My friend did , do she applied for it & was accepted, so she gets her Suboxone for free directly from our doctor! It's helped alot so THANK YOU FOR POSTING THESE LINKS!!!

Hey there, i'm new to the forum - using suboxone for well over one year now and I'm getting ready to begin detoxing. One good benefit is it takes away the urge to drink alcohol. I'll need to prepare myself against that first drink.

Hello to all from Australia (down-under).
I am new to the forum also.
Yep! - we have the same needs in Australia as anywhere else in the world.
Really interested to read the post immediately prior to this by 'mdtuttle' who writes -
'One good benefit is it takes away the urge to drink alcohol.'
I have found this myself and although I have not had a drink now for well over two years I had been thinking about how the urges and cravings to drink have all but gone since being on this current course of suboxone for my opiate addiction.
I suppose I have already gained the benefit of being a member of this forum when reading that experience from somebody else.
Thank you.

So to all who are addicted and having trouble with the paying for it part of this treatment think of how hard that we worked on coming up with the money for are addiction and remember we did things that were impossible to do something bad for us.So always know that you can do this I have referred some of my friends that were also addicted they too did not have insurance my doctor worked with the ones who were serious.Sorry if it is not offered in your area(CAUSE IT IS A LIFE CHANGING EXPIERIENCE).ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU CAN DO THIS.

I agree. Honesty is definately the key. I've been on suboxone for about a month now. I've been addicted to tramadol for 7 yrs. The suboxone alone (8mgs) helps a great deal. I just can't find a regular program that's covered by my insurance so that I can get the mental help that I need.

This is really awesome that this has come so far! We're online now! Everything else is too though so it's not surprising, I just think it's really cool. Thank you! I can't wait to get back into this. When I was clean is the happiest time of my life!

Hi all, glad to be here. Have been struggling with opiate addiction on and off for over 15 years. I got really hooked after breast cancer surgery over the past 4 years. I had a 16 day stay in rehab where I was on sub 4 mg qid for only 4 days. I relapsed after leaving there and having to have hip surgery. I am now seeing an amazing Addictionologist and have been on sub 8 mg bid for the last 4 days. Feeling great so far and really wanting to do all I can to get my life under control - this time! This is a great forum, looking forward to meeting some great people who can help me in my recovery. Thanks for reading!

Hello, thanks to the Administrators for setting this up.

Is there a Thread Menu page somewhere on the site or do I just scroll down through the threads until I find one of interest?

any and all replies and guidance until I learn this format is very appreciated.

Whew...my head's a-spinnin'! I think this is going to be a great place to stay focused and help soothe me as I begin my recovery from hydrocodone addiction......but I gotta come back tomorrow with a more clear head!! Peace everyone...

Thank you for your help.
Hi everybody. I was addicted to many type of opiates and alcohol for twenty plus years. I first became clean and sober in 1989 and stayed that way for twenty years. Well, here I am. I have only been on suboxone for a few days. I am not sure what to expect, it sure helps with the PAWS. I am getting a lot of helpful information on this site. Thank you all, maybe we can all come out of this hell together.
God bless you all.

Talking

Hello everyone my name is Felicia.. Im new to all of this. Im currently on Suboxone. I went to my first appointment on Dec. 4th, 2010. I used to be addicted to lortabs and percocets. I would still be using if it wasnt for the suboxone. Im so thankful i was able to go to the doctor. I was afraid i wouldn't be able to come up with the 400 dollar doctor fee, but i did with the help of my family. I would like to talk to anyone that has an interest in the recovery treatment. On Tuesday Dec. 14th, 2010 i have my first drug screen/ pill count appointment. Can anyone tell me what goes on during this appointment? Well I hope that anyone that reads this has a blessed day! Felicia~
